4thEstate published a post on April 1 that highlighted how the media was amplifying that citizens favored Santorum’s personality over Romney’s, over which they were repeatedly quoted as being skeptical about. Since Santorum dropped out of the race on April 10, the media’s coverage has continued to use the citizen newsmaker type as a way to focus on Romney’s character as potentially problematic to the general public. Many citizen newsmaker statements are still critical of his character. When discussing Romney, over 50% of statements from citizen newsmakers speak to his personality (Character). 29% of these statements about Romney’s character are negative and only 18% are positive. His positive sentiment is down from March, when he had 42% favorability amongst the citizen newsmaker type. The media is trying to say that Romney still has work to do in order to improve his likeability among voters.
