Message and Sentiment of Obama Staff

Chart Shows Message and Sentiment of Obama Campaign Staffers (excludes Obama). March 24-April 20.

In the past 30 days, the Obama campaign has awoken after a drawn out Republican primary that will see Mitt Romney as the GOP nominee.  With a target defined, the Obama campaign staff has begun to focus its most heated rhetoric against Romney in regards to the Economy and Romney’s personality (labeled Character in the chart).  While over 25% of the statements from Obama campaign staffers have been about campaign strategy and these have been predominantly neutral in tone, the campaign staffers discussion of the economy and candidate character (almost 30% combined), is embedded with more sentiment.

With over 50% of their statements on the Economy being positive to Obama, the staffers are defending Obama’s record on the economy.  Romney and the GOP beltway have been slamming Obama for having a poor economic record.  In response, the Obama team frequently provides supportive fact-checks and statements of confidence in Obama’s plan going forward.

On the offensive front, Romney’s personality has been the main line of criticism for the Obama campaign staff.  76% of their statements about Romney’s character are negative.  Among other points of attack, the Obama campaign staff has drawn attention to Romney’s wealthy background in order to portray him as a man who is out of touch with the middle class and disconnected from the problems that most Americans face.
